On May 7 and 8, Niterói, RJ, will host the First ELLAS Forum, an event by the ELLAS International Cooperation Network, supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada. This gathering will bring together researchers from Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and the United States for a transformative dialogue on gender equity in leadership in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Together, we will present the ELLAS Open Data Platform, a powerful tool that compiles structured data on initiatives, policies, and contextual factors that impact gender equity in STEM in Latin America. We will foster knowledge exchange among experts and partners in the field, sharing research and experiences. We will strengthen our network, expanding the impact of our commitment to inclusion and the reduction of disparities in STEM. We’ll discuss innovative ideas, paving the way for a future with more opportunities and representation for women in universities, industries, and public institutions.

This is the moment to connect with an engaged network, share experiences, and contribute to building a fairer and more equal future in STEM.

The Impact of ELLAS: Research, Open Resources, and Policies to Drive the Future of STEM

Speaker: Indira Guzman

Indira Guzman is a professor of Computer Information Systems and the Director of the Mitchell Hill Center for Digital Innovation at California State Polytechnic University Pomona in the United States. She received her Ph.D. in Information Science and Technology and a Master of Science in Information Management as a Fulbright scholar from Syracuse University. Her research work and publications are related to the impact of information technology (IT) on business and society, behavioral information security, the IT workforce, gender gap in IT, and the IT occupational culture. She serves as a research consultant for the project funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) via the UNISELVA Foundation.

Speaker: Leticia de Oliveira

Neuroscientist, Full Professor at UFF, and Senior Researcher at University College London (UK) from 2017 to 2022. Recognized as a “Scientist of Our State” by FAPERJ and a productivity fellow at CNPq. Her research focuses on the interaction between attention and emotion using neuroimaging in the human brain, applying artificial intelligence to predict psychiatric disorders. Leticia is Chair of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee at FAPERJ, a member of the Permanent Gender Equity Committee at UFF, and also a member of the Gender Equity and Intersections Committee at CAPES. She is part of the Parent in Science movement. Mother of a 20-year-old daughter.

ELLAS Talk

Researchers, students, and professors will share their experiences in reducing the gender gap in STEM within one of the following topics:

Factors – influencing the participation (or lack thereof) of women in leadership positions in STEM fields – motherhood, menopause, caregiving responsibilities (such as elderly care), domestic violence, lack of family/school encouragement, socioeconomic issues, among others.
Initiatives – events, programs, and other actions aimed at supporting the entry and retention of women in technology careers.
Policies – examples of resolutions in universities, companies, etc.

Café de Conexões

The “Café de Conexões” will be a space for exchange and discussion among participants of the ELLAS Forum. It will take place during the morning and afternoon coffee breaks on May 8, 2025, at Hotel H, Niterói.

The authors of accepted presentations will present their work orally, supported by banners created by themselves. Presentations may be delivered in Portuguese, Spanish, or English.

Do I need to register?

Yes, all participants must register by the 6th in order to receive a certificate.

Is there a registration fee?

Registration and participation are free of charge.

Will certificates be issued?

Yes, certificates will be issued to participants at the end of the event.

Will there be a lunch break?

Yes, there will be a break from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM for lunch. You can choose to eat at the hotel or leave and return for the afternoon sessions. For those coming by car, just inform the valet that you’re attending the event and will return after lunch — you won’t be charged again for parking.

Will the videos/presentations be available later?

Yes, after the event all presentation videos will be available on our website.

Can I attend only one day?

Absolutely! When registering, you can indicate which day(s) you are able or wish to attend.

How will the registration work?

The registration will take place on the morning of the 8th, at Hotel H Niterói.

Will participants attending on the 7th also receive a certificate?

Yes, we will have an attendance list on the 7th, as the official registration will occur on the 8th at Hotel H Niterói.

Check-in is available from 2:00 p.m. and check-out must be completed by 12:00 p.m. (noon).

Is breakfast included in the rate?

Yes, the daily rate includes a delicious buffet breakfast served in the hotel restaurant from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Does the hotel offer internet access?

Yes, Wi-Fi internet access is complimentary for guests.

Is parking available? What is the cost?

Yes, parking is available at a cost of R$ 25.00 per day, per vehicle.

If I leave the hotel for lunch and return, will I be charged again for parking?

No, just inform the valet when leaving that you will return, and you will not be charged a second time.

Can I check in earlier (early check-in)?

Early check-in is subject to availability on the day of arrival and incurs an additional fee: R$ 100.00 + 12% (single room), R$ 150.00 + 12% (double room), R$ 200.00 + 12% (triple room)

Is the special event rate refundable?

Usually, event-negotiated rates are non-refundable. We recommend confirming the specific cancellation and refund conditions directly with the hotel when booking.

Can minors under 18 stay at the hotel?

Yes, as long as they are accompanied by parents or legal guardians and present the required documents as per local legislation.

Can I take professional photos in common areas?

Photo shoots and the use of professional cameras are not allowed in the hotel’s common areas without prior authorization.

Can I receive visitors in my room or at the hotel?

Visitors not listed on the guest reservation/voucher are not allowed to enter the hotel or rooms.

Are pets allowed?

No, pets are not allowed at Hotel H.
